Why Do Dogs Eyes Glow

Why Do Dog Eyes Glow In The Dark from www.pawsandfurs.com

Why Do Dogs’ Eyes Glow?

Have you ever been walking at night and noticed a pair of eyes glowing in the dark? Chances are, it was a dog! Dogs’ eyes are known to glow when exposed to light, and this phenomenon is known as eyeshine. This can be seen in many different types of animals, not just dogs, but it is most easily seen in canines.

Eyeshine is caused by the reflection of light off of the back of the eye, also known as the tapetum lucidum. This is a layer of tissue that is located behind the retina, and it reflects light back onto the retina, allowing the animal to see in low light conditions. It is this reflection that causes the eyes to appear to be glowing in the dark.

The tapetum lucidum is the reason why certain animals, such as dogs, cats, and horses, have excellent night vision. It amplifies the light that enters their eyes, allowing them to make out shapes and objects in the dark. This helps them to navigate in low light conditions, and gives them an advantage when hunting.

The color of the eyeshine can vary between different animals, and it is often used by scientists to identify different species. In dogs, the eyeshine is typically seen as a yellowish or greenish color, while cats typically have a blueish or whitish eyeshine.

The intensity of the eyeshine is also affected by the color of the animal’s coat. Darker animals, such as black dogs or cats, will have a more intense eyeshine than lighter animals, such as white or yellow cats or dogs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, eyeshine is caused by the reflection of light off of the back of the eye, which is known as the tapetum lucidum. This allows animals, such as dogs, cats, and horses, to have excellent night vision, and the color of the eyeshine can vary between different species. The intensity of the eyeshine is also affected by the color of the animal’s coat.
