The Basics of Grooming a Spanish Water Dog
Spanish Water Dogs are a unique breed that has been around since the 12th century, originating in Spain. Their coats are wavy, curly, or a combination of both. Because of their unique coat, grooming and maintaining a Spanish Water Dog can be somewhat of a challenge, but with the right knowledge, it doesn’t have to be. In this article, we’ll discuss the basics of grooming a Spanish Water Dog and what you need to know in order to keep your pup looking and feeling his best.
Brushing
Brushing your Spanish Water Dog’s coat is essential in order to keep it looking its best. You should brush your pup’s coat at least three times a week to remove any dirt, debris, or dead fur. It’s best to use a slicker brush or a pin brush, depending on your pup’s coat type. It is also important to brush your pup’s coat in the direction of its natural growth pattern.
Bathing
Bathing your Spanish Water Dog is also important in order to keep him looking and smelling his best. You should bathe your pup at least once every two weeks with a shampoo specifically formulated for dogs. Be sure to use warm water and lather the shampoo thoroughly in your pup’s coat before rinsing it out. After bathing, you should use a high-velocity dryer to thoroughly dry your pup’s coat.
Trimming
In addition to brushing and bathing, you should also trim your Spanish Water Dog’s coat. You can use either scissors or clippers for this task. If using scissors, you should use a pair of curved scissors to trim around the face and ears and a pair of straight scissors to trim the body. If using clippers, you should use a #7 blade to trim the body. Be sure to move the clippers in the direction of the coat’s growth pattern.
Nail Clipping
Nail clipping is also an important part of grooming your Spanish Water Dog. You should clip your pup’s nails every two to four weeks to keep them from getting too long. It’s best to use a pair of clippers specifically designed for dogs. You should also be sure to clip the nails at a 45-degree angle and be careful not to clip too close to the quick, as this can cause bleeding and pain.
Ear Cleaning
Ear cleaning is also an important part of grooming your Spanish Water Dog. You should clean your pup’s ears at least once a month to prevent wax build-up and infection. You should use a cotton swab with a gentle ear cleaning solution. Be sure to be very careful when cleaning the ears, as the ear canals are delicate and can easily be damaged.
Dental Care
Dental care is also an important part of grooming your Spanish Water Dog. You should brush your pup’s teeth at least two to three times a week with a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for dogs. You should also provide your pup with chew toys and treats that are designed to help keep his teeth clean and healthy.
