The Legacy of Lewis and Clark’s Dog

In 1803, a group of explorers set out on a journey of discovery. Led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the group included a host of talented individuals, such as Sacagawea, a young Shoshone woman who served as a translator and guide, and Seaman, a Newfoundland dog who served as a loyal companion and hunting dog. The expedition, which is now referred to as the ‘Lewis and Clark Expedition’, was a massive undertaking, and the team encountered a variety of challenges and obstacles as they explored the uncharted American West.

Seaman, Clark’s loyal dog, became a beloved member of the team. Seaman proved to be an invaluable asset to the expedition, helping to hunt and protect the group from any potential dangers. He even joined in on diplomatic meetings with Native American tribes, at which he was given gifts and treated with respect. As the group traveled, the dog’s presence was recorded in the journals of Lewis and Clark. Seaman even appears in a couple of the few images taken of the expedition.

Today, Seaman is celebrated by historians, schoolchildren, and animal lovers alike. In 2003, two hundred years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition set out, the U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp honoring Seaman.

Seaman’s Descendants

In 2002, a direct descendant of Seaman, named Lewis, was donated to the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. The pup was adopted by a member of the foundation, and continues to honor his ancestor’s legacy.

In addition to Lewis, other direct descendants of Seaman can be found in kennels across the United States. These dogs are often referred to as ‘Seaman-style’ Newfoundlands, and their owners proudly display the historic connection to Seaman and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. These dogs are popular show dogs, and have even been used for therapy and assistance dogs.
