How To Teach A Puppy Paw

Teaching Your Puppy How to Paw

Teaching your puppy to give you his paw is a great way to bond with him and can be the basis for more complex behaviors. It is a relatively easy trick to teach and can be done in a few brief sessions. The first thing that you need to do is make sure that your puppy is comfortable with having his paws touched. If he is not, then you will need to work on that separately before you start teaching him this trick.

Start by getting your puppy to focus on you. You can do this by giving him a treat or by offering verbal praise. Once he is focused, hold a treat close to his nose. Then move your hand up and towards his paw. As soon as he lifts his paw up, give him the treat and tell him what a good boy he is. Repeat this process several times, each time asking for a slightly longer lift of his paw.

Adding the cue

Once your puppy is able to lift his paw for a few seconds, you can start to add a cue. A cue is a specific word or phrase that you use when you ask your puppy to do a trick. For this trick, you can use the word “paw”. Once you have said the word “paw”, move your hand up towards his paw, just like you did before. When he lifts his paw, give him the treat and praise him.

Repeat this process several times, each time saying the word “paw” before you move your hand up towards his paw. After a few repetitions, your puppy should start to understand that when you say the word “paw”, he needs to lift his paw. Once he is able to do this reliably, you can start to fade the treat.

Fading the treat

Fading the treat means that you will start to give him the treat less and less often. Start by giving him the treat every other time he lifts his paw. Then every third time and so on. Eventually, you will only be giving him the treat once in a while. You can also start to praise him instead of giving him the treat. Praise can be just as effective as a treat for rewarding your puppy.

Once your puppy can reliably lift his paw when you say the word “paw”, you can start to add a verbal cue. This is a specific command such as “give me your paw”. Say the command and then give your puppy the cue to lift his paw. As always, reward him with a treat or verbal praise when he does it correctly.

Teaching your puppy how to paw is a great way to bond with him and can be the basis for more complex behaviors. It is a relatively easy trick to teach and can be done in a few brief sessions. With patience and consistency, you can have your puppy pawing in no time!
