Potty Training Your Puppy In The Winter

Potty training your puppy during the winter months can be an especially daunting task, but with a lot of patience and some simple tips, potty training can be accomplished quickly and easily. Every puppy is different, and the breed and age of your puppy will determine how soon your puppy will be house trained. However, the basics of potty training during the winter months are the same. Here are some tips to help you potty train your puppy in the winter.

1. Invest In Quality Potty Training Supplies

It’s important to invest in quality potty training supplies. Choose a potty training pad that is absorbent, durable and easy to maintain. Make sure it’s big enough for your puppy to move around and turn around without feeling cramped. If you’re using a crate, be sure to get a crate that is the right size for your puppy. Also, make sure that you have a designated potty spot for your puppy. This will help them to associate going to the bathroom with that specific spot.

2. Stick To A Potty Training Schedule

Having a consistent potty training schedule is essential. Take your puppy outside at least every two hours and after meals, naps, and play times. Be sure to take your puppy out first thing in the morning and last thing at night. If possible, try to take your puppy out for potty breaks about the same time every day. This will help your puppy to learn when it’s time to go to the bathroom.

3. Use Positive Reinforcement

Whenever your puppy goes to the bathroom in the right spot, make sure to reward them with praise and treats. This will help them to associate going to the bathroom in the proper spot with something positive. Be sure to keep the treats small and age appropriate. Also, try to be consistent with your praise and rewards.

4. Limit Access To The House

Limit access to the house by using baby gates or closing doors. This will help to keep your puppy confined to certain areas of the house, and it will help to prevent accidents. If you’re using a crate, make sure to allow your puppy enough time out of the crate to go to the bathroom. Also, make sure to take your puppy outside after they’ve been out of their crate for a while.

5. Monitor Your Puppy

Monitor your puppy’s behavior so that you can anticipate when they need to go to the bathroom. If you notice that your puppy is sniffing around or circling, it’s time to take them outside. Also, if your puppy is whining or barking, they may need to go to the bathroom.

6. Be Patient

Potty training can be a long and frustrating process, but it’s important to be patient and consistent. With enough patience and positive reinforcement, you will be able to potty train your puppy in the winter months. Remember to always reward your puppy with praise and treats, and soon your puppy will be potty trained in no time.
