Heartworm Cough in Dogs: What You Need to Know in 2023

As technology advances, so does the understanding of heartworm cough in dogs. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening illness caused by parasitic worms. Heartworms can live for years in the heart and lungs of dogs, causing permanent damage and even death if left untreated. The good news is, heartworm disease is preventable with regular testing and preventive treatments. But if your dog has heartworm disease, it is important to understand the signs and symptoms, including the heartworm cough.

A heartworm cough is a distinctive sound made by an infected dog. It is a dry, hacking sound usually heard when the dog is excited or active. The cough can be mild or severe, and it is often accompanied by difficulty breathing. Typically, the cough will worsen with exercise, and the dog may have trouble catching his breath after strenuous activity. Other symptoms of heartworm disease include weight loss, appetite changes, and fatigue.

In 2023, the American Heartworm Society recommends testing all dogs over six months of age for heartworm disease, and then repeating this test every year. If your dog tests positive for heartworm, it is important to begin treatment right away. Treatment usually involves the use of two types of drugs, a macrocyclic lactone, and a nitroimidazole. The drugs are administered over a period of several weeks, and your vet will provide instructions on how and when to give the medications. After treatment, your vet will likely recommend repeating the heartworm test in six months to ensure the infection is gone.

In addition to regular testing, there are several preventive treatments available for heartworm disease. Most preventive treatments are given monthly and are available from your vet or a pet supply store. It is important to follow your vet’s instructions for administering preventive treatments, as the drugs must be given on a regular schedule to be effective. Some preventives also protect against other parasites, such as fleas and ticks, so be sure to ask your vet about the best option for your pet.

The Bottom Line for 2023

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening illness in dogs. A heartworm cough is a common symptom, but there are other signs to look out for as well. Testing and preventive treatments are the best way to protect your dog from heartworm disease. If you think your dog may have heartworm, contact your vet right away to begin treatment.
