What is Dog Purple Tongue?
It is more than likely that you have seen a dog with a purple tongue before, but have you ever stopped to consider why? The answer lies in the breed of the dog, as some dog breeds have a genetic trait that causes their tongues to turn purple. Though it may look unusual, it is generally not a cause for concern. In this article, we will take a look at the phenomenon of the purple tongue, why some dogs have it, and how to keep your pup healthy.
The purple tongue phenomenon is most commonly seen in two breeds of dogs: the Chow Chow and the Chinese Shar-Pei. This is due to a genetic mutation that causes the tongue to lack melanin, the pigment that gives skin, fur, and eyes their colour. As a result, the tongue will appear purple in colour. While it may look unusual, it is not a cause for concern, and in the majority of cases, the purple tongue is simply an aesthetic issue.
Do Dogs with Purple Tongues Need Special Care?
For the most part, dogs with purple tongues do not require any special care. In fact, the only thing that you may need to do is to be mindful of their diet. A good diet is important for any dog, however, it is even more important for dogs with purple tongues, as the lack of melanin in their tongues can make them more susceptible to sunburns and other issues. Make sure to feed your pup a nutritious, balanced diet to help keep them healthy.
Can Dog Purple Tongue be Prevented?
Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent a dog from developing a purple tongue, as it is largely due to genetics. The best thing that you can do is to be aware of the possibility, so that you can keep your pup healthy and safe. Dogs with purple tongues can be more prone to sunburns and other skin issues, so make sure to keep them out of direct sunlight and always provide plenty of shade and water when they are playing outdoors.
What if My Dog’s Tongue Turns Purple?
If your pup’s tongue turns purple, there is no need for alarm. As mentioned before, the purple tongue is generally just an aesthetic issue, and does not pose any health risks. However, if your pup does start to show any signs of illness or distress, it is best to take them to the vet for a checkup, just to make sure that everything is ok.
Tips for Keeping Your Dog Healthy
The best way to keep your pup healthy, regardless of their tongue colour, is to provide a balanced and nutritious diet. Make sure that they have plenty of fresh water and access to the outdoors, and remember to always keep them out of direct sunlight. Additionally, regular checkups with a vet are advised, just to make sure that everything is in order.
Conclusion
The purple tongue phenomenon is quite common in certain dog breeds, and while it may look unusual, it is generally not a cause for concern. The best thing that you can do is to be aware of the possibility, and to feed your pup a balanced, nutritious diet to help keep them healthy. Additionally, make sure to provide plenty of shade and water when they are playing outdoors, and remember to take them for regular checkups with a vet, just to make sure that everything is ok.
