Cytopoint Side Effects In Dogs

Cytopoint Side Effects in Dogs

Cytopoint is a cutting-edge, monoclonal antibody treatment approved by the FDA in 2017 to treat the symptoms of atopic dermatitis in dogs. It was developed as a more effective and longer-lasting alternative to traditional steroid medications. While this treatment has been widely used with great success, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects that can occur. In this article, we will discuss the potential Cytopoint side effects in dogs and what you need to watch for if your pup is taking this medication.

What is Cytopoint?

Cytopoint is a biologic medication specifically designed to target and reduce the production of a specific type of protein known as interleukin-31. Interleukin-31 is a cytokine, which is a type of immune system protein that is known to contribute to the intensity and duration of itchiness in dogs with atopic dermatitis. Cytopoint works by blocking the effects of this protein, which in turn helps reduce the itching and inflammation associated with the condition. Cytopoint is administered as a single injection that typically lasts 4-8 weeks.

Common Cytopoint Side Effects in Dogs

Fortunately, the vast majority of dogs experience no side effects after receiving a Cytopoint injection. The most common side effect reported is local inflammation or irritation at the injection site. This is typically mild and short-lived and can be managed with a cold compress applied to the injection site. Other more rare side effects reported include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. If any of these side effects are observed, it is important to contact your veterinarian.

When to Contact Your Veterinarian

It is always important to contact your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing any side effects after receiving a Cytopoint injection. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as anaphylaxis or allergic reaction may occur. If you observe any signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, or hives, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Conclusion

Cytopoint is an effective and safe treatment for atopic dermatitis in dogs. The vast majority of dogs experience no side effects after receiving this injection, but it is important to be aware of the potential side effects that can occur and to contact your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing any of them. With proper monitoring and care, your pup can get the relief they need from the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.
