Understanding Detached Retina in Dogs

A detached retina in dogs is not an uncommon condition, though it can be a serious one. It occurs when the retina, the nerve layer at the back of the eye, separates from the inner wall of the eye. In some cases, it can be treated with corrective eye surgery, but in others, the damage may be too severe and the dog will be left with a permanent vision impairment. Regardless, it is important that pet owners are aware of the signs and symptoms of a detached retina in dogs so that they can seek the appropriate medical attention for their pets as soon as possible.

Causes of Retinal Detachment in Dogs

Retinal detachment can occur in dogs of all ages, but it is more common in senior pets. Hereditary conditions, such as progressive retinal atrophy, can increase the risk of a detached retina in dogs. Other causes include trauma to the eye, inflammation, or tumor growth. In some cases, the cause may be unknown.

Signs and Symptoms of Retinal Detachment in Dogs

If your dog’s retina has detached, you may notice some of the following signs: cloudy vision, difficulty seeing in dim light, squinting, a dilated pupil, or a sudden onset of blindness. Your dog may also display signs of pain, such as whining, pawing at the affected eye, or rubbing it against furniture or the floor.

Diagnosing Retinal Detachment in Dogs

If you notice any of the above symptoms in your pet, it is important to take them to the vet as soon as possible. Your vet will perform a complete physical exam, including an eye exam, to diagnose a detached retina in dogs. They may also take X-rays and other imaging tests to determine the cause and extent of the detachment.

Treating Retinal Detachment in Dogs

If the detachment is caught early enough, your vet may recommend corrective eye surgery to reattach the retina. This can help restore some of the vision that has been lost. In more severe cases, the detachment may be too extensive to repair and the dog may be left with a permanent vision impairment. In these cases, the vet may prescribe medications to help reduce inflammation and control pain.

Preventing Retinal Detachment in Dogs

It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a detached retina in dogs so that you can seek treatment as soon as possible. Additionally, regular vet visits and eye exams can help detect any potential problems before they become serious. If your dog is at risk for a detached retina due to a hereditary condition, be sure to keep up with your vet’s recommended schedule of eye exams.
