Puppy House Training Regression: Simple Steps to Get Back on Track

Potty training a puppy can be a challenging task. It takes patience, consistency, and dedication to get your furry friend to learn to use the restroom outside or in an appropriate spot. Unfortunately, sometimes even the most well-trained puppy will have a regression in their house training and need a bit of help getting back on track. Thankfully, there are some simple steps you can take to help your pup get back on the potty training wagon!

Establish a Routine

The first step to getting your pup back on track is to create a routine. Puppies thrive on routine and consistency, and when things change or deviate from the norm, it can throw them off. Establish a schedule for when you will take your pup out for potty breaks, when they will eat, and when they will have playtime. This will help them understand what is expected of them and will help them stay on track with their house training.

Pay Attention to Cues

Another important step in helping your pup get back on track with house training is to pay attention to their cues. Does your pup start to pace, bark, or whine when they need to go outside? If so, make sure you are paying attention and take them out when they give you cues that they need to go. This will help them learn that their behavior is leading to a result, and it will reinforce the behavior that you want.

Reward Good Behavior

Rewards are a great way to reinforce positive behavior in your pup. Whenever your pup successfully relieves themselves outside, make sure to give them lots of praise and rewards like treats or belly rubs. This will help them learn that this behavior is desired, which will encourage them to do it more often.

Clean Accidents Thoroughly

If your pup has an accident in the house, it is important that you clean the area thoroughly. Puppies have a tendency to return to the same spot if it still smells like their urine or feces. If you don’t thoroughly clean the area, your pup will be more likely to have repeat accidents in the same spot.

Be Patient

Finally, it is important to be patient when working with your pup to get back on track with house training. Puppies learn at their own pace, and it can take time for them to completely understand the concept of going potty outside. Have patience and be consistent with your efforts and eventually your pup will get the hang of it!
