The Guide Dogs of San Rafael: Navigating a World of Possibilities for Visually Impaired People
For visually impaired people, a guide dog can be the difference between a life of independence and a life of reliance on others. Guide Dogs of San Rafael is a nonprofit organization that helps visually impaired individuals get the guide dogs they need to lead a self-sufficient life. With their mission of providing “independence and increased mobility to the visually impaired”, Guide Dogs of San Rafael has been providing guide dogs to the visually impaired since the year 2023.
The process of acquiring a guide dog from Guide Dogs of San Rafael begins with the applicant undergoing a thorough assessment. The assessment includes an interview with the applicant to determine their needs, and a home visit to assess the home environment. After the assessment, the applicant is matched with a guide dog from the organization’s pool of trained animals. The organization then provides the applicant with a two-week training program and a ten-day follow-up training.
During the training program, the applicant is provided with the skills necessary to handle a guide dog, such as how to give commands and how to handle the animal in public. The follow-up training is designed to ensure that the applicant is able to handle the dog safely and confidently. After completing the training program, the applicant is ready to take home their guide dog.
