What are Mango Worms?

Mango worms, also known as Cuterebra, are parasitic worms that infect wild mammals such as cats and dogs. They are often found in warmer climates, and can be spread by flies. Mango worms are not contagious to humans, but they can cause serious health issues in dogs, cats, and other animals. Symptoms of mango worms include skin irritation, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing.

How do Dogs get Mango Worms?

Dogs can become infected with mango worms when they come into contact with eggs or larvae that have been deposited on the skin by flies. The larvae will then burrow into the skin and begin to feed on the dog’s tissue. As the mango worm grows, it will cause a lump in the skin that can be quite painful.

Symptoms of Mango Worms in Dogs

The most common symptom of mango worms in dogs is a lump or bump under the skin. The lump may be red and inflamed, and may also be tender or painful when touched. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. If the mango worms have caused a severe infection, the dog may also have difficulty breathing.

Diagnosing Mango Worms in Dogs

If you think your dog may have mango worms, it’s important to take them to the vet for a proper diagnosis. The vet will need to take a sample of the lump in order to identify the mango worms and determine the severity of the infection. The vet may also want to run some blood tests in order to check for any underlying health issues that may be causing the infection.

Treatment for Mango Worms in Dogs

Treatment for mango worms in dogs usually involves surgically removing the worms and cleaning the wound. The vet will then prescribe antibiotics to help prevent infection. In some cases, the vet may also recommend a course of anti-parasitic medication to help rid your dog of any remaining worms.

Preventing Mango Worms in Dogs

The best way to prevent mango worms in dogs is to keep them away from areas where flies are present. This means keeping your dog inside or in a fenced in area when they are not supervised. You can also use insect repellents on your pet to help keep flies away. Finally, make sure to regularly check your dog for any lumps or bumps that could indicate an infection.
