Keeping Dogs Out of the Litter Box: Tips and Tricks for 2023

It’s no secret that dogs and cats don’t always get along. Even in the most well-adjusted pooch-and-kitty households, there can be a bit of tension between the two species. One area where that tension can become especially pronounced is when it comes to the litter box. Dogs, with their curious noses, often find it irresistible to investigate the contents of the litter box. Unfortunately, that can lead to messes, odors, and potential health risks. But never fear! With a few simple steps, it is possible to keep your pup out of the litter box for good.

Step 1: Invest in an Enclosed Litter Box

One of the best ways to ensure your pup stays out of the litter box is to invest in an enclosed model. This type of litter box typically features walls or a lid that hinders your pup’s access. For extra protection, you can purchase a litter box with a self-closing lid. This type of litter box will automatically close when your cat enters and exits, closing your pup out.

Step 2: Place the Litter Box Out of Reach

In addition to investing in an enclosed litter box, it’s also important to place the litter box in a spot that your pup can’t reach. This may mean placing the litter box in a room that your pup doesn’t have access to, or if that’s not possible, placing it on a high shelf or countertop. You may even consider investing in a wall-mounted litter box, which will keep the litter box out of your pup’s reach even if he is in the same room.

Step 3: Keep the Area Clean

It’s also important to keep the area surrounding the litter box clean. Not only will this help keep your pup out of the litter box, but it will also help protect your cat’s health. Be sure to scoop out the litter box daily to remove any waste and odors that may be attracting your pup. Additionally, clean up any litter that may have been kicked out of the litter box and vacuum the area regularly.

Step 4: Provide an Alternative

Your pup may be drawn to the litter box out of curiosity, or even boredom. To keep your pup away from the litter box, it’s important to provide an alternative. This may mean investing in some new toys or puzzles for your pup to play with, or simply providing more attention and exercise. Whatever you choose, it’s important to provide an alternate activity to help keep your pup away from the litter box.

Step 5: Use Positive Reinforcement

Finally, positive reinforcement is key when it comes to keeping your pup out of the litter box. When you catch your pup in the act of trying to investigate the litter box, be sure to redirect his attention with a toy or treat. Additionally, be sure to praise and reward your pup with lots of love and affection when he stays away from the litter box. With lots of patience and consistency, you can ensure that your pup stays out of the litter box for good.
