What is the Difference Between Gophers and Prairie Dogs?

Gophers and prairie dogs are both small burrowing mammals, but they are not the same species. Gophers, also known as pocket gophers, are found in North and Central America, while prairie dogs are native to North America. Though they may look similar, gophers and prairie dogs have several differences.

Gophers are much larger than prairie dogs, with an average length of 8-14 inches, compared to the 5-8 inch length of prairie dogs. Gophers also have long, fur-lined external cheek pouches that are used to carry food and nesting material. Prairie dogs do not have these pouches, and instead forage for food with their claws and teeth. Gophers also have much longer tails than prairie dogs.

Habitat and Diet

Gophers prefer to live in open meadows and grasslands, while prairie dogs are adapted to prairies and open grasslands. Gophers eat a variety of plant material, including grasses, roots, and tubers. Prairie dogs are herbivores and primarily eat grasses, but they will also eat insects and other small animals.

Behavior and Socialization

Gophers are solitary animals, though they may share burrows with other gophers. They are shy and reclusive, and will flee if disturbed. Prairie dogs are social animals, living in large colonies or “towns”. They communicate with each other using a variety of vocalizations, and some species even use body language.

Reproduction

Gophers breed once a year, usually in the spring. The gestation period is about three weeks, and the female will give birth to up to four young. Prairie dogs breed in the spring or summer, and the gestation period is about four weeks. The female will give birth to up to eight young.

Predators

Gophers and prairie dogs both have a variety of predators, including foxes, coyotes, badgers, and birds of prey. Both species are also hunted by humans for their fur.

Conclusion

Though gophers and prairie dogs may look similar, they are actually two different species. Gophers are much larger than prairie dogs, and have long external cheek pouches for carrying food and nesting material. Gophers also prefer to live in open meadows and grasslands, while prairie dogs are adapted to prairies and open grasslands. Gophers are solitary animals, while prairie dogs are social and live in large colonies. Finally, both species have a variety of predators, and are hunted by humans for their fur.
