Cushing Disease in Dogs – What You Need to Know

Cushing disease in dogs is becoming an increasingly common diagnosis among pets, especially those over 10 years of age. Cushing’s disease is a hormonal disorder caused by an overproduction of the hormone cortisol. It is also known as hyperadrenocorticism. This condition can affect the dog’s overall health and cause a variety of symptoms, including excessive urination, thirst, and panting. In some cases, it can even lead to additional medical problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and organ failure. It is important for owners to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Cushing’s and to seek help from their veterinarian as soon as they suspect something may be wrong.

The most common symptom of Cushing’s disease is excessive thirst and urination. Dogs may also have an increased appetite and eat more food than usual. Other signs may include a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss or thinning, excessive panting and fatigue, and frequent licking or biting at the skin. In some cases, the disease may cause the dog to become weak and lethargic, or to develop skin infections.

Causes of Cushing Disease in Dogs

Cushing’s disease is caused by an overproduction of cortisol from one of the adrenal glands. This can be triggered by a tumor on the adrenal gland or, more commonly, by a tumor in the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is located in the brain and produces the hormone that tells the adrenal glands to make cortisol.

Diagnosing Cushing’s Disease in Dogs

Diagnosing Cushing’s disease in dogs can be difficult. Your veterinarian will take a complete medical history and perform a physical examination. Blood tests and urine tests may also be recommended to rule out other conditions and to help confirm a diagnosis of Cushing’s. In some cases, an ultrasound or X-ray may be necessary to look for tumors on the adrenal gland.

Treatment for Cushing’s Disease in Dogs

Treatment for Cushing’s disease in dogs depends on the underlying cause. If the cause is an adrenal gland tumor, surgery may be recommended to remove the tumor. In cases of pituitary tumors, medication may be prescribed to help regulate the production of cortisol. In both cases, follow-up care is necessary to monitor the dog’s response to treatment and to make sure the disease is kept under control.

Preventing Cushing Disease in Dogs

Unfortunately, there is no sure way to prevent Cushing’s disease in dogs. However, there are some steps you can take to reduce the chances of your pet developing the condition. Make sure your dog gets regular exercise, and provide a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure your pet has regular check-ups and that any medical conditions that may be related to Cushing’s, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, are monitored and treated if necessary.
