Signs of Dog Autism
In the past few years, awareness of autism in dogs has been on the rise. While there is no test for canine autism, there are certain symptoms that can help to identify it and provide your pup with the best possible care. Here, we’ll be discussing the signs of autism in dogs and what you can do to help your pup if you suspect they have this condition.
Changes in Social Interactions
One of the most common signs of autism in dogs is a change in the way they interact with their family members and other animals. Dogs with autism may become more withdrawn, preferring to be alone and avoiding physical contact. They may also become more aggressive or lash out, particularly when they are overstimulated. In addition, they may become less responsive to commands and show fear of certain places or activities.
Changes in Behavior
Autistic dogs may also exhibit a variety of changes in their behavior. This can include repetitive behaviors like spinning, pacing, licking, or tail chasing. They may also become fixated on certain objects or activities and become hyperfocused on them. Other behavioral changes include excessive barking, chewing, or digging.
Sensory Processing Issues
Autistic dogs often have difficulty processing sensory information. For example, they may be overly sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells. They may also be less responsive to petting or grooming and show signs of distress when being touched. Additionally, they may display fear or anxiety in response to certain stimuli.
Changes in Eating and Sleeping Habits
Autistic dogs may also experience changes in their eating and sleeping habits. They may eat too much or too little, or they may experience difficulty sleeping. Additionally, they may become obsessive about certain types of food or eat only certain types of foods.
Getting Help for Your Autistic Dog
If you suspect your dog may have autism, it’s important to get them evaluated by a veterinary behaviorist. They can help you create a treatment plan for your pup and provide you with advice on how to best manage their condition. Additionally, there are a variety of therapies and medications that can help to reduce the symptoms of autism in dogs. With the right care and support, your pup can lead a happy and healthy life.
